China forum 'offers opportunity for NZ export double strategy'
Amidst the outbreak of another global food scandal world authorities gathered in Beijing, China for a forum on ‘Food Safety and Sustainable Agriculture’ last week.
"The current paradigm of food production, distribution, marketing and consumption is creating a polluted environment, needless waste and unhealthy people. It’s a retarded system not serving people, produce or planet." Said Brendan Hoare, Managing Director of Organic Systems Ltd.
"A core challenge humanity faces, is how to change this scenario. Fortunately there are answers, and these were shared." Mr Hoare said.
Overwhelming evidence presented from prominent scientists, researchers and practitioners from all continents clearly reiterated that farming practices, which are heavily dependent on fossil fuels and agrichemicals result not only in higher emissions of greenhouse gases and contribute to climate change, but that commonly used chemicals like Roundup are in fact contributors to increased adverse effects on environmental and human health with intergenerational consequences.
"My inclusion to the forum stems from a long association with the region and commitment to relationships that focus on ‘Finding Common Ground’ and solutions. I reiterated this at the forum. There are very clear opportunities for New Zealand in a world that is begging for safe, clean and nutritious food. However, we do need to act decisively. My advice to the New Zealand food sector and government is that if export double is a key strategy for growth, then we must retain our non GMO status and invest significantly in sectors like the fastest growing multi food sector in the world, organic." Reports Mr Hoare.
"Why?" Mr Hoare questions. "Because it is clear from the Forum that people have lost trust in the food system and are increasingly suspicious of claims. Governments and industry leaders are seen to have failed us. What we do know is that being Organic, non GMO and having the internationally recognised certifications to back the claims, together with a well branded NZ story offers an insatiable opportunity in the market place. NZ is so well placed to deliver on that opportunity. I say we find common ground to make it happen."
